It is a felony -- grand theft.

He may not have his life ruined since he might be able to lie his way out of it -- but you'd be surprised how hard it can be to lie and get away with it. Had he ever told anyone he gave the jewelry to her? Did she? Lots of ways to get caught -- for example, you know about it, so you might testify against him. If he told you, who else did he tell? etc. etc. He should just give it back to her and then he'll be able to sleep better.

There was no breaking and entering, he has the receipts, and there is no written proof of the gifting.

No grounds for criminal charges.

Worst he is looking at is breach of promise which is a civil suit.

She can't prove any of it. Furthermore, she gave him a key to her house. Its not burglary if you trust someone and they violate that trust.

If he gave it to her then it is now her jewely. So it is a crime for him to take it back.

And that would be a felony since the jewely is worlth so much.

It is a crime because he gave those things as gifts. He has no right to them since they are not his property. The girlfriend could have thrown the jewelery into the ocean and he couldn't do anything about it.

He can go to jail for burglary.

If he has the reciepts for and possession of the jewelry, then it is her word against his about who actually owns them. (Unless there are witnesses on either side.)

If he admits in court that he gave them to her as a gift, then he is screwed. Otherwise it is a stalemate, and he is safe.
