I keep a wooden box on my dresser to empty my pockets in at the end of the day. I dropped a gold chain in, it shorted across the terminals of a 9 volt battery and the current built up enough heat that the wooden bottom of the box began to smolder. I can't imagine any other way it could happen but it damn sure can like that.... It’s totally possible under the right circumstances. The only thing that theoretically could is the battery shorting out in one of thewm, but they're such small batteries in watches I couldnt honestly see that happening, especially as the batteries are sealed inside the watches with nothing to ignite...
