In 1894, the Regina Company was founded.The term “musical box” is also applied to clockwork devices where a removable metal disk or cylinder was used only in a “programming” function without producing the sounds directly by means of pins and a comb.

At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, most musical boxes were gradually replaced by player pianos, which were louder and more versatile and melodious, when kept tuned, and by the smaller gramophones which had the advantage of playing back voices.

The Regina Music box’s rich sound remains unsurpassed in America and elsewhere as the mechanism for the instrument differs from others of the period. The interchangeable music disks made by Regina would fit all of their boxes of the same size.   The interchangeable cylinders were individually matched to the box they came with, so it was not easy to get new tunes for a cylinder music box.

On most Regina music boxes, one (single) or two (double) combs are mounted under one radius of the tune sheet, and thus move across about half the case width. The comb and wheel mechanism are mounted to a steel plate that runs across the full width or half the width of the case.

Collectors prize surviving musical boxes from the 19th century and the early 20th century as well as new music boxes being made today in several countries.Regina music box cases are made either of mahogany, maple or oak beautifully polished. A typical size is 21 inches long, 18 1/2 inches wide by 9 1/2 inches high. Working parts contains 156 tongues, while the tune sheets are 15 1/2″ in diameter, rendering possible the rendition of the most difficult and classical music with perfect precision and charming execution.
