USPS does not "provide" packaging materials other than boxes for Priority Mail or Express Mail. USPS does offer for sale, packaging materials.

The Flat Rate Box mentioned would not be very economical, $8.95 in postage required for the FRB, for something that is lightweight. There are other, smaller Priority Mail boxes to be had that would weigh less than 1 pound, and would then cost just $4.60.

If you provide your own packaging, such as purchasing a padded envelope, you could use First Class Mail that would be less than $4.60.

Additional services such as Delivery Confirmation, Insurance etc can be applied to any of the aforementioned shipping services.

Bring your ring, in the ring box you have. At the PO, you can get a "flat rate box" for free to put it in. If you don't want it to bounce around in the box, bring a few sheets of newspaper or bubble wrap. The flat rate box is priority postage and will get to the destination usually in 2-3 days. You should add insurance, it won't cost too much. If you want a person to sign for it, you have a couple of options. You can send it certified with a return receipt(you get a card back with signature on it). A cheaper way is to send it delivery confirmation. A person does not need to sign for it, but you can get a record of when it was delivered. Hope this helps you out, and thank you for using the USPS. Yes I am a mailman :)

I would strongly recommend wrapping it there directly at the office, and then wrapping it with paper there. This way, the post man wouldn't freak out and accidentally mistake it as a small bomb. Working with a employee would be a great idea, as well as some padding for the jewelry and it's box itself.

Wonder who the lucky person will recieve that ring. =)

they sell padded envelopes at the post office. you will have them ring it up and pay for the postage then. you probably want to insure it, which is a little extra.
