Crumble up newspaper and close the box for a couple of days. This should do the trick.

Try using cedar blocks, I have found them to be very reliable when trying to get rid of unwanted odors in drawers, hampers, and all kind of places.

It is possibly the chocolate type musty smell that you can sense in this box. I take it that it is tin because of your comments about rust.
I have used this successfully to rid tupperware of smells and perhaps you may like to consider this for the container. It simply involves putting it in the freezer in an open state for a few days - you won't be wetting it this way but it may attract some moisture after you take it out because it will be rather cold. Dry it thoroughly and place in a nice airy sheltered spot outside to air after and dry it off well. If you think it would be ok place it in some sun but perhaps you may like to make sure that the outside pattern is not in the sun, you could drape a towel or similar around it and allow the inner surface to make sun contact.
Hope this may be of some use to you
